April Showers Bring May Flowers
Hello all of my little friends! Now that the April showers have ended, we are seeing beautiful May flowers! What? You have not heard of the phrase that “April showers bring May flowers”? Well, this goes way back when I was a young fairy – before I met Herbie!
The rainy month of April causing flowers to grow in the month of May is first mentioned by Thomas Tusser in a book written in 1557 called A Hundred Good Points of Husbandry. The book contains a version that goes like this: “Sweet April showers Do spring May flowers.” This was meant as advice for the farmer indicating when he should plow and plant seeds in his fields. Later, the phrase was published in a poem by poet Mathilde Blind, and was titled April Rain.
In the 1500’s there were no video games, radios, televisions or cell phones. In fact, electricity wasn’t even invented yet! So, people wrote poems and short phrases, sometimes called jingles when rhyme , to teach lessons that would be easy for people to remember. In fact, Ben Franklin was very good at this. Did you ever hear a stitch in time saves nine? That was Ben Franklin’s way of teaching people to not wait until the last minute to do something like sew their socks!
I see that all of you are still doing very well with your brushing and flossing New Year’s Resolutions! I am so very proud of you all. I am happy that the May flowers are arriving, that is a fairies’ favorite time of year! Everything is so bright and new and fresh – just like your little darlings. You know how much I care about your little pearly whites! In fact, two of my science buddies wrote a great YouTube video about everything I have been telling you about teeth, brushing, flossing and fluoride. Take a break from reading and watch the video:
